Shop by Style: Plantation

We’re all familiar with the classic Hollywood image of a Southern American ‘big house’, or ‘plantation-style’ property. It’s an image that evokes vibes of Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind or the numerous adaptations of Alice Walker’s The Color Purple that were made for both stage and screen. But who built these vast homes? And what do plantation houses reveal about the society that produced them?

Recently we were reminded of the ‘plantation’ style of home, and it got us thinking. We are used to calling summer houses, lazy porches, and wide windows ‘plantation style’ but then we wondered what a real plantation house was like, and how different it would be today.

The plantation home has long been regarded as a symbol of the antebellum South. With their many windows and wide porches, and set amidst a sweeping landscape of grand trees, they have always evoked a sense of time gone by — a leisurely past that lends to the tranquillity we still find today in the surrounding fields, woodlands, and marshes that make up this area.

If you’d like to incorporate bespoke, craftsmanship that is gracious, a classical style in your own home, here’s how to get the look.
